Offering Our Time

Week 18 of the “Believe” Series is about Offering Our Time. Time is a valuable commodity. I read recently about how the Greeks understood that truth which is why they had two words for time.

One of the Greek words for time was “chronos”. This word was used for sequential time or chronological time. In other words, this word represents time in minutes and seconds.

The second word for “time” in the Greek language is “kairos”. This Greek word is used for a window of time or an opportune time, or the right time.

In my sermon yesterday, I shared that God has given us 86,400 seconds each day and we have a choice to give it to God or keep it to ourselves.

I believe if time is viewed only in the context of “chronos”, then we tend to function according to schedule, task or appointment. This tends to put time in our hands and neglects the leading and move of God within the 86,400 seconds of the day.

If “chronos” time, is balanced with “kairos” time, I believe we then not only leave room for God in our schedule and plans, but we more importantly give God authority and control over our time and plans. Then the “right and opportune times” are led by God as we continually and intentionally seek Him.

To live with this balance of “chronos” and “kairos” time, is to live what the Apostle Paul describes in Colossians 3:17. “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

The Apostle Paul also describes how we can start living or walking in the best use of time for God’s purpose and God’s glory in Ephesians 5:15-16 (ESV). “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”

Time is a gift from God… a valuable commodity. I pray we all seek God for His provision and strength to live both our “chronos” and “kairos” time in unity for His purpose and His glory.
